SJU Airport - US passport holders

Passengers over 18 years old are required to present valid identification documents upon arrival at the Airport checkpoint. Those who are visiting Puerto Rico from the U.S. arrive at the ground floor of the Airport building (Puerto Rico Airport Arrivals area) and should move towards Terminal A or B to claim their luggage. Since Puerto Rico is a U.S. territory, passengers who are citizens or residents of the U.S. are not obliged to provide a passport while entering Puerto Rico. They only must present an ID with a photo issued by a government or Permanent Resident Card.

Foreigners traveling to San Juan, Puerto Rico

Upon arrival at the Airport, international travelers need to exit the gate and pass to the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) processing zone. Once passengers undergo CBP primary control, they have to claim their luggage and proceed to U.S. Customs and Agriculture. If travelers need help with transporting their belongings, they can seek the assistance of luggage carriers which can be found at the San Juan Puerto Rico Airport Arrivals zone. After passing customs, passengers may proceed to exit the Airport.

Puerto Rico Visa requirements for non-US citizens

Those who are visiting the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico from another city/town outside the U.S., need an approved VISA to enter the Caribbean Island. Before applying for a nonimmigrant VISA, check out the filing process and necessary papers as they vary depending on the U.S. Embassy or Consulate where you apply. So, you should follow the particular instructions for the country that you're in.

San Juan Airport vet control

If you travel to Puerto Rico with your pet, it must undergo obligatory SJU animal control. Thus, you need to provide a health certificate for your pet confirming it is healthy and fit to fly. You must also present proof of the current rabies vaccine which is required for dogs and recommended for cats. Please note that traveling to/from Puerto Rico to/from any part of the Continental U.S. for pets is not considered an international shipment. So, dogs and cats only need regular local health certificates as well as proof of up-to-date vaccinations (if any).

For international flights, you need to ask the vet to issue the International Health Certificate

within 10 days of departure. The airlines allow traveling to dogs that have been vaccinated against rabies at least 30 days before entry (except for puppies younger than 3 months). According to the SJU pet policy, your dog/cat pet needs to undergo treatment for external parasites within 72 hours of entering Puerto Rico. The treatment must be noted by your vet on the issued health certificate.

Please check the demands of your airline regarding shipping the pet in cargo or carry-on luggage. You can also address the special pet shipping agencies that provide paid assistance.
